Mechatronics and Robotics

The word “mechatronics” came into use at the end of the1960s, when a Japanese engineer of Yaskawa Electric Corporation created this term by combining the prefix “mecha”(from “mechanics”) with the suffix “tronics” (from “electronics”).

Since then the term “mechatronics” has acquired a wider meaning and it is now used to describe a design philosophy, rather than a specific technology.
The most common definition of mechatronics emphasizes synergy: mechatronics is the synergistic combination of precision mechanical engineering, electronic control and systems thinking in the design of products and manufacturing processes.

Over the last few years mechatronics products and systems have been characterized by an increasing use of embedded computational intelligence as well as a dramatic process of miniaturization in components, such as micro-actuators and micro-sensors.

One example of such a trend can be found in the automotive sector, where car performances, handling and comfort have been positively affected by the introduction of a number of intelligent sensors (such as the ABS braking circuit) and actuators (such as the intelligent suspensions and other similar components) fully integrated in a common system where all subcomponents communicate with each other and with a central computing unit.
